Sound Waves
Sound
is energy that travels to the ear in waves.  The QuietZone System includes a variety of methods to disrupt the wave's path and decreases sound transmission.

Volume is measured in decibels (dB), a logarithmic unit.  VCR RemoteComfortable hearing levels range from about 30 dB (a whisper) to 110 dB (loud rock music).  Average listening volumes for TVs, VCRs and stereos usually hover around 90 dB.  In a typical home, a "quiet" room has a sound level of about 38 dB.  A Normal conversation raises the sound level to about 70 dB.

STC - Three letters that mean more as you hear less.  The Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating is a measurement - expressed in decibels - that describes a structure's ability to resist sound transmission.  The higher the STC rating, the greater the structure's ability to limit the transmission of sound.

Owens Corning (R)By incorporating combinations of all three elements for proper sound control, the QuietZone Acoustic Management System can help raise the STC rating of a standard interior wall from 4 to 12 decibels, depending on the wall's construction.

The various options of the QuietZone Acoustic Management System let you customize the ideal sound control combination for any environment.   Choose the proper QuietZone System approach to suit any room's noise level, or to meet budget parameters.

Electrical.  Do not construct light switches and outlets back-to-back.  Place wall fixtures a minimum of 24" apart, light switches at least 36" apart.

FlooringWood Joist Floors.   Standard carpet and pad; 3/8" particle board surface; 5/8" plywood sub floor; single layer 1/2" gypsum ceiling on resilient channels spaced 24"; one thickness QuiteZone Fiberglas Acoustic Batt (3 1/2" thick).

Doors.  Choose solid wood-core doors for optimum noise control.  Install a threshold closure at the bottom of the door to reduce sound transmission.

DuctsDucts.  Install Owens Corning Fiberglas Duct Board or our premium EnDuraCoat™ Duct Board-instead of noisy metal ducts.  Both types of duct board help maintain consistent air temperatures while minimizing sound transmission.  EnduraCoat Duct Board also features a smooth acrylic coating on the inner surface for easy cleaning and maintenance.
